Free abortion

This page in Swedish.

Free abortion was introduced in Sweden on the 1 january 1975. There was an intense debate for and against free abortion in the years before this. A debate book for free abortion, but also with a collection of the major arguments against free abort, was published in 1964, written by Jacob Palme. A short summary of the debate for and aginst free abortion can also be found (in Swedish) on this page from the RFSU web site.

Here is a link to the complete text of the book in Swedish, in PDF format, compacted to only 22 A4 pages, without any change except addition of a fore word shortly summarising what happened after the publication of the book.

Back text from the the printed book in 1964:

”Free abortion is an important social reform. This reform has been forgotten in the Swedish welfare state. It has the same reasons as other social reforms - to increase security and reduce the number of despaired, unhappy and suffering people."

”It is a reform which frees women from the duress of unplanned pregnancies. It is a reform with the aim that all children should be born wanted - by parents who are willing to give them love and care. It is a reform which will abolish the thousands of sometimes fatal illegal abortions."

This is some excerpts of this book, in which Jacob Palme summarises the arguments both for and against free abortion. It illustrates this much-disputed problem with facts from offical statistics and scientific investigations, and reports on the experience from countries which already have free abortion.
